I write poetry as a way to vent my anger against social injustice and political crimes against humanity. The concentration required to write poetry helps me to divert my feelings and calm down. It somehow makes me feel that I am responding to the violation of evil by yelling at the devil in my rhymes.
I have been honored by requests to read my poetry at the Topaz Art Center in NYC and the Blue Door Arts Center in Yonkers. And it has been a privilege to read my poem “Trayvon Martin” at the Martin L. King Library in White Plains.
Just a teenaged boy
Carrying his candy
He was going home
Wearing a hoodie
Just an ordinary hoodie
To protect him from the rain
Walking on the sidewalk
An ordinary sidewalk
A regular sidewalk
He was going home
Out of the darkness
Of an impoverished mind
Came the blindness of stupidity
Came the violence of evil
Not seeing the sweetness
Not seeing the innocence
Not seeing the youth
Not seeing a hoodie
Seeing only a bull’s eye
On a misplaced back
Seeing only black
Out of the shadows
Driving in the dark
Came the gun toting stalker
Following, following
Watching, poor little Trayvon
A scared teenaged boy
Targeted for nothing
Armed with the sidewalk
Weaponized with cement
Poor little Trayvon
Dead on the street
He was shot to death
In a pool of blood
On his own sidewalk
On our sidewalk
He was shot to death
His crime?
Being a black boy
Wearing a hoodie,
Just an ordinary hoodie
Was walking home
Just walking home
This poem is based on the very powerful and inspirational words, ideas and wisdom that my parents, Frieda and Solomon Mnuskin always espoused.
It could have been a schoolhouse
It could have been a highway
It could have been a new way
It could have been a talk down
It could have been kindness
Instead it was a cruel word
Instead it was a murder
Instead it was a bombing
Without reason
Instead it was bloodshed
Always the bloodshed
Fighting without reason
Need another way
People are different
All very different
All want the same thing
Life without bloodshed
Life without fear
Life free of hate
A smile for the children
Billions of dollars
Millions of lives
All blown up in bombings
Shredded happiness and tears
For oil, copper, diamonds, power and gold
Power for whom?
Four hundred men
Singing and dancing
At the feet of the golden calf
Praying, praying just for more
Getting money, money, money
Blackwater ruling
Enron ruling
Exxon ruling
Corporate rulings
Bribery for votes
Anything for votes
People are people
Flesh and blood people
Not heartless corporations
Bleeding us dry
Four hundred men
Taking us into depravity
In their Mercedes chariots
They send us into insanity
To murder, to destroy
While the children starve
Dying on the mine fields
Orphans, from greed
Four hundred men
Tell us stories and lies
So we will want to kill
Strangers of no harm
So they can make another buck
Another yen, a franc, a pound
Money, money, money
Killing just for money
For oil, copper, diamonds, power and gold
Killings without glory
Killings without reason
Dead in our blood soaked rags
So four hundred men
Gain oil, copper, diamonds, power and gold
In their golden Lear jets
Filled with booze and delight
Flying high above us
Not seeing, not caring
How we live or die
The sick, the infirm
The injured, hungry children
The poor, the aged
Can all just rot?
In their golden Lear jets
They fly high above us
Not seeing, not caring
How we live or die
Four hundred men all seeking power
Money and power
Can all go to hell!
We don’t need leaders
Taking us into depravity
Into insanity to murder and destroy
We don’t need leaders taking us into hell
It must be a new way
It must be kindness
It must be a sit down
We can find a better way
It could be a schoolhouse
It could be a highway
It could be a new way
To the prosperity of peace
It should be children playing
It can be children playing
War an ancient nightmare
Reality must be peace!
Kindness and peace!
